The Performer

Allow performers to perform more naturally in the way they know how

The Wave Stage 🠒 allows performers to perform virtually while reducing the learning curve for people unused to VR but with lots of experience performing live.

Important things to consider here were:

  • Reducing cognitive load: performing is already hard and requires a lot of concentration. How can they just use their body in the way they already know? How can we get them to understand all the data and features we're throwing at them so they can understand how they're doing?
  • Encouraging interactivity with the audience: how can we make them feel less like they're performing to a small group of people?
  • Readability of information: while the screen is large, we can't make things too small or they just won't see it since it'll get lost or hard to read over such a busy screen

The Attendees

Make it easy for them to show their appreciation for the show

The consumer-facing side is the performer app for the Oculus Quest 3, which is currently in beta 🠒.

Show attendees had different priorities from a performer, and had expectations around what a show should look like:

  • Natural reactions: as much as possible, make it easy for them to react to things visually without having to think too hard about it
  • Accessibility for different ways of showing up: make sure that folks can both be seated and standing without having that be disruptive to the overall experience
  • Immersion without distraction: make them focus on the show, rather than being distracted by tons of small interactions because that's what they're there for. This means making the environment align with the show through things like audio-reactivity to make it feel more all-encompassing of an experience
  • Allow them to give back to the performer: not just their reactions, but their genuine feedback and possible monetary support
